Big Gift 2013: Small Actions Make a Big Difference

Protecting the Marañon River, Peru
In partnership with Nature & Culture International, rainforest acres surrounding the Marañon River will be added to the International Student Rainforest Reserve. Each penny donated will add 1 square yard of rainforest to the Reserve.

In these mountain forests, Marañon River flows through steep hillsides - pouring into the Peruvian Amazon, the river is critical for water supplies throughout northern Peru
The Marañon River is threatened by mercury pollution from gold mining upstream and by proposals to build 9 hydroelectric dams on the river
Unique, threatened species are protected in the Reserve, including the very rare Yellow-tailed Woolly Monkey, Mountain Tapir and Spectacled Bear
Community members are training as conservation managers of the International Student Rainforest Reserve
Local schools are participating in environmental education for the long-term protection of the rainforest

Protecting the Colorado River, USA
In partnership with The Nature Conservancy, we are protecting the Colorado River & her tributaries for beavers, otters and more than 30 million people. Each penny will purchase 1 gallon of clean water for these threatened waterways. Donations from New Mexico only will be contributed to The Nature Conservancy.

Healthy rivers create a healthy ecosystem that supports forests on the river banks, agriculture in nearby fields and an enormous variety of animals, birds and insects
In 2013, water will be purchased for the Colorado River and her tributaries to help ensure enough water for the otters and beavers that make their homes on the river
